Week 1 : Introduction

 




    For my country, I decided to go with Spain. Spain is primarily located in southwestern Europe, on the Iberian Peninsula.  According to Britannica, Spain occupies about 85% of the Iberian Peninsula, which it also shares with its neighbor Portugal. In 2023, Spain had an estimated population of approximately 47 million people. An interesting fact I found about Spain was that it is made up of 17 autonomous communities, and each of these communities has its own distinct culture and language! 

    A natural hazard is a physical event or process with the potential to cause harm or damage only when humans are in their path. Whereas a disaster occurs when a natural hazard impacts a community or region in a significant way causing a disruption to normal life over a limited period. A catastrophe is a large-scale disaster that often results in severe damage and loss, which requires a large sum of money and takes a long time to recover from.

     Spain is located on the Iberian Peninsula, which is part of the Iberian tectonic plate. This plate is located between the African plate to the South and also the Eurasian plate to the North. Due to the interactions between these two plates, they contribute to a moderate amount of seismic activity in this region. The interaction between these two plates is a convergent boundary (collide) which is known to be a subduction zone.       Though Spain may have moderate seismic activity compared to other Mediterranean countries it still has more intense seismic activity in the south and eastern parts of Spain. For example, according to the European Journal of Geography "Malaga has experienced stronger and more frequent earthquakes that had happened in the past causing severe damage to the area." Week 3: Earthquakes

      Spain experiences earthquakes less frequently and less severely than other countries on major tectonic plates. Spain's most seismically active regions are in the eastern part of Spain, like Catalonia and parts of the Balearic Islands. The southern regions near the boundary with the Mediterranean Sea are more active as well.       While earthquakes are somewhat rare in Spain, they still can occur. For example, the Spanish region has experienced some notable earthquakes in the past. One of those past earthquakes was the 2011 Lorca earthquake which had a magnitude of 5.1, this earthquake caused significant damage to the town and caused several fatalities and injuries.  The most recent earthquake in Spain happened on Sep 4, 2024, at 12:57 PM only 18 mi away from Granada, Andalusia, Spain.
