Week 10: Extreme Weather

Spain has recently faced extreme heat waves, which have caused a significant climatic concern especially as global temperatures are on the rise. Spain's heat waves become more frequent and intense mainly during the summer months (June to September), the expected temperatures were to reach 40 degrees Celsius. The temp tires in Spain could also possible sore above 40 degrees Celsius in multiple regions, the interior and southern parts of Spain. The causes of these heat waves consists of the varied geography Spain has, including its mountainous regions/plains, this contributes to localized heating. According to AP News, "Weather forecasters said a large mass of hot air travelling across the Mediterranean from northern Africa will settle over central and southern Spain. That, combined with the typical harsh summer sun, will make cities like the beautiful medieval cites of Sevilla, Toledo, and Granada bake."

As for the responses, Spain's government and its regional authorities have heat alerts that are often issued to the public to help alert and inform the public to prepare for extreme conditions. They also have public health campaigns to educate people about staying safe during these extreme heat waves, which include hydration tips and recommendations. Finally, Spain's cities are also focusing on green infrastructure like parks, and shaded areas to help mitigate the heats effect on people.

  1. Hi Ashlynn thank you for your post about extreme weather in Spain. I had no idea that Spain got so hot especially because it's so close to my home country England that rarely is warm. It seems like the easiest way to protect people is to keep them informed about what to do when it's hot because you can't really do anything else to stop the sun besides staying indoors. I like the balanced solution of developing more parks and greenery to help protect people while also being eco friendly.

  3. Hi Ashlynn,
The country I have chosen is beginning to get a heat hazard, but it will start to rise if there is no proper care for the climate. I was not aware that Spain gets an intense heat wave during Summer. It was interesting reading about the mitigation in Spain. I definitely agree that staying hydrated is important because of the intense heat wave.
Overall great job on your blog post !
